The Chemical Formula for Copper–tungsten is CuW, it is also known as tungsten–copper (WCu). This is basically a combination of copper and tungsten. This is not a true alloy, it is what is known as a metal matrix composite. Copper–tungsten has the combination of copper and tungsten and the result is a material which is easy to machine, ablation-resistant, electrically conductive, highly thermal and heat-resistant. Copper Tungsten rod is used widely in the aerospace sector and in areas calling for high temperature uses such as welding, heating and electrical.

In its most common usage, the Copper–tungsten mixture is composed of 10–50 wt.% of copper, the rest of the part is mainly tungsten. The density of CuW90 (10% of copper) is 16.75 g/cm3 and for CuW50 it is 11.85 g/cm3. Because of its density and hardness, Copper–tungsten is ideal for use in high density applications, electrical discharge machining, electrical contacts, resistance welding, heat sinks, electro-chemical machining, projection welding electrodes, electro-forming and electro-forging dies and armaments. Tungsten Copper rod provides excellent corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and high wear resistance and as such, such rods are ideal for use in seam welding bearing inserts, electrical resistance welding, facing for electro-forming and electro-forging dies, EDM welding, facing and inserts for flash and butt welding dies, projection welding electrodes and a number of electrode applications. Materials made from Copper–tungsten provide very good corrosion resistance and have excellent mechanical properties. Such materials are widely used in many types of oil devices, as they can protect them against oxidation.
